Campus Compost

Campus Compost is an exhibition about systems of waste and recycling, arising from the curator Joseph Harvey’s own feelings of conscience around the systemic production of waste he was implicated in as a university student.

Curator

My curatorial practice is broadly focused on what truly interests me personally and thus stimulates my own creative practice, which are the questions around humanity’s relationship with the natural world, and how – at times – toxic this can be. With particular influences rooted in Arte Povera, I am fascinated in the method of joining the dots and closing the gap between the natural and the artificial, industrial worlds. An approach that reflects my own internal dynamic, attempting to bridge the gap between being a relatively introverted person, yet feeling energised and invigorated by sharing ideas, and discussing what it means to pursue creativity. I am currently studying on MA Curation after graduating with a degree in English Literature and Film at Exeter. Working out of Devon, Cornwall, Oxford and Warwickshire, as part of the MA, I undertook an internship with the University’s Arts and Culture team.

Taking conflicting emotions such as climate anxiety, a sense of claustrophobia and, most-importantly, optimism that there are approaches happening now that can contribute to long-term environmental change, Campus Compost translates these abstract feelings into a three-dimensional immersive environment.

The exhibition is composed solely of a large-scale installation of second-hand furniture, filling up the gallery space, mirroring the over-powering sense of trepidation that comes to mind when thinking about the effects of climate change. Made up of discarded furniture, equipment, and domestic materials (which will be returned and actively reused at the conclusion of this project, helping to save waste from ending up in landfill), Campus Compost is a celebration of the project partners, such as Warp-It and the Environment & Climate Emergency Team at University of Exeter who champion recycling on campus and work to provide positive platforms which strive to affect sustainable change in the waste sector.
